How can I improve my writing skills?
One of the most effective methods of improving writing skills is to receive feedback on your work. At Matrix, students receive individual assistance and personalised feedback on their written work at the Writing Centre. It is FREE to all Matrix English students.
What is the Matrix English Writing Centre?
The English Writing Centre offers individual assistance with English studies, directly addressing the problem areas of each student.
The writing centre is open for:
- Year 7 - 10 English students: Tuesday 3:30pm - 7:30pm
- Year 11 - 12 English students: Saturday 9:30am - 4:30pm
Students may book into 1 hour slots, with a limited number of 5 students in each session. Within this hour, students will receive individual assistance from the English Academic Team. Students can receive assistance with:
- School assessment tasks
- Matrix homework
The English Academic Team will help students:
- proofread and edit assignments
- identify gaps in their central argument
- improve stylistic writing concerns such as grammar and structure
- explain conceptual and theoretical issues associated with textual analysis
- effectively apply critical theory to their school texts
- develop a clear understanding of essay writing
It is important to note that this workshop aims to improve independent writing skills - the work will not be done for the student; rather the teacher will guide students in developing a sophisticated and effective academic style.
Students find that the individual support received from the Writing Centre generates confidence and improved assessment marks in their school English studies, and their studies at Matrix.

"The teacher [Niven Kumar] is so knowledgeable. With every question I ask, he responds in depth and with relevant information, and he is honest about my work. He provides me with great resources, and all this has helped me improve my school assessment marks. He has also helped with exam situations, teaching me how to approach a question."
Jason Yoon, 2008 Year 12 student
