In 2007 a student in top 10 percentile received a scaled mark of 75.2/100 whereas a student in top 1 percentile received a scaled mark of 91.2/100. This represents a difference of 16 marks! Hence it is important that ESL students ace the HSC exam in order to score a high UAI.

ESL English students at Matrix receive: 

  • Weekly Theory Booklets introduce and examine a broad variety of texts, both written and visual
  • Weekly Vocabulary Quizzes create a useful bank of literary terms that will assist students in developing a cohesive and effective writing style 
  • Weekly Work Booklets provide written homework tasks that assist students in revising and applying the core knowledge and skills introduced in class 
  • Templates for a variety of textual forms including essay writing 
  • One-to-One Individual Support on written work, provided through ‘The Writing centre’ to students who need to improve analytical, critical and written skills 
  • Additional assistance with school work, provided at the Writing Centre

Fundamentals of English – Junior ESL

Years 7, 8, 9 and 10:
The Matrix Fundamentals of English course supports the language learning needs of ESL learners, and provides students with the opportunity to communicate effectively and confidently in English.

During each lesson, students develop:

  • skills in effective reading, writing, listening and speaking strategies for academic and communication purposes
  • the confidence and knowledge to ensure success in their study of English
  • critical and analytical skills required to engage in a concentrated study of narrative 

 

YEAR 11 ESL: 

The ESL Preliminary English course provides students with opportunities to address broad aspects of language through an Area of Study.
Students explore, analyse and experiment with meaning conveyed and shaped within a text, and explore connections between and among texts.
Students build a wide vocabulary base and develop a firm understanding of the requirements of an essay response, essential for success in the HSC ESL syllabus.



YEAR 12 ESL:

The English ESL course provides students with the skills and opportunity to become effective and confident communicators in English. They are encouraged to engage widely in all aspects of communication, reading, speaking and listening, in an effort to achieve success in their HSC ESL English studies.
Students extend their reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representing skills through an integrated engagement with the prescribed HSC texts.
Students build a wide vocabulary base and develop a firm understanding of the requirements of an essay response, essential for success in the HSC ESL syllabus.
