How does Creative composition feature in my HSC exams and assessments?

All English courses for the HSC require creative response writing. In the compulsory Standard and Advanced English Paper 1, there is an explicit creative writing question which is awarded 15 marks, a third of the total mark allocation for this paper, and in the Extension 1 paper, the creative component is worth 25 marks, 50% of the total allocation. Your Extension 2 major work may be based completely on a creative piece, with its accompanying reflection statement. You will have other creative writing assessment tasks throughout the year which contribute to your cumulative score.

Who should attend?

Students studying Standard, Advanced Extension 1 and Extension 2 English will benefit from this course. The application of strategies to enhance your writing skills, stimulus material and a study of structure and techniques will help shape your creative material into Band 6 / Band E4 responses.

Who will teach the course?

Strathfield campus: Dr Giulia Giuffre

Giulia was awarded a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours, and has completed a Doctorate in English Literature at Oxford University. She has published extensively, both critically and creatively, and is currently at work on a number of her own creative projects. Giulia has served as President of the Sydney University Literature Society, and as a member of the selection panel for entry to the Graduate Medical Program at the University of Sydney. She has taught secondary and tertiary students for many years, and has an intimate knowledge of the demands of the NSW Higher School Certificate syllabus.

Chatswood campus: Fiana Stewart

Fiana has a Master of Arts, and has taught at HSC level in high schools in English and Drama. She has a special interest in English Extension 2 and creative writing, having successfully supervised and mentored students through their major works. She has previously specialized in Shakespeare studies at Cambridge during her undergraduate degree, and has completed several performance works. As well as teaching English, Fiana works as a freelance writer and editor, and has experience in the publishing and media industry.

Will I receive practice exam questions?

You will receive a booklet of practice creative response questions and stimulus, including questions from a variety of 2009 school trial exam papers, Matrix English department’s own sample exam questions, and past HSC external exam questions.

How do I receive feedback on my work?

After the course, it is expected you will complete practice exam questions, and then attend our Writing Workshop on Sunday 2nd May to receive individual feedback from our experienced English staff. The staff will assist you in refining your work, and show you how to improve your composition in order to achieve a Band 6 response.
