Year 10 Maths Acceleration

COURSE OVERVIEW

The Year 10 Acceleration course at Matrix Education provides Acceleration students with a structured and rigorous course incorporating topics covered in the Stage 5.3 Course as well as topics from the Stage 6 Preliminary HSC Course.  This course is recommended for any Year 10 student who is preparing to sit for the Y12 HSC Advanced Mathematics course at the end of Year 11.

This course is intended for able and highly motivated students who are willing to accept challenge.  It aims to deepen their understanding and appreciation of Mathematics.  Students are provided with the opportunity to extend and enrich their learning in Mathematics through extension work and challenging exercises provided in our Theory and Work Booklets.  During Matrix Term 4, Year 10 Acceleration classes will be 3 hours of duration and students will formally begin the Y11 Ext 1 Preliminary Course.

There is a growing number of schools that accelerate, from the beginning of Year 9, their brightest and highly motivated students who have shown the ability to work independently and have a high level of interest in extending themselves in Mathematics.  Many of these students are presented for the HSC examinations in Advanced Mathematics or Mathematics Ext 1 at the end of Year 11.

Year 10 students who participated in the Year 9 Acceleration Course and are preparing to sit for the Y12 HSC Mathematics Extension 1 Course are recommended to join the Year 11 Mathematics Ext 1 Course at the end of Year 9.

During each lesson, students develop:

  • an understanding of the fundamental mathematical ideas presented in each topic.
  • an understanding and appreciation of the increasing complexities and abstract nature of Mathematics.
  • theory and proofs that show relationships and patterns within and across topics.
  • mathematical skills to apply their knowledge and understanding to mathematical problems that are graded in level of difficulty.
  • the ability to analyse concrete and abstract problems and select the appropriate methods to the solution.
  • the ability to present logical solutions using appropriate strategies and providing sound reasoning to justify their conclusions.

Students receive:

  • Weekly Theory Booklets with clear and explicit explanations of the concepts and skills addressed in each topic prescribed in the NSW Board of Studies Years 7 -10 Mathematics Syllabus. Routine and challenging examples illustrate the application to a wide variety of mathematical situations.
  • Weekly Work Booklets provide students with further practice of the work covered in the theory lessons so as to increase students’ confidence in applying mathematical skills and techniques.
  • Regular Quizzes to monitor student understanding of the work covered in the previous lesson and diagnose any weaknesses that need to be addressed in the lessons.
  • Tests conducted twice a term to assess student mastery of the topics covered during the term.
  • Timely Feedback on homework, quizzes and topic tests.
  • Extra Assistance is provided through weekly 'Workshops' to students who are identified as experiencing difficulty with the work covered in the Theory lessons or homework. Workshops are conducted by our tutors. There is no added charge for this service.

Students will learn in:

Term 1: Graphs, Curve Sketching, Functions and Logarithms

Term 2: Circle Geometry, Quadratic Polynomial

Term 3: Polynomials, Probability

Term 4: Roll over to Year 11 Mathematics Extension Course.

                  Absolute Values,  Inequalities, Trigonometric Ratios
