Year 10 Science
COURSE OVERVIEW
Year 10 Science is a compulsory subject for the NSW School Certificate. Overall achievement in Science combines a range of school-based assessments and external testing of the knowledge outcomes learnt in Years 9 & 10. Students sit the SC Science examination at the end of Year 10.
At Matrix, students are engaged in learning science through hands-on demonstrations and interactive technology. The syllabus is used as a baseline and jumping off point to establish the foundations for further courses in science. Students who complete the Matrix junior science course have a significant advantage in Year 11 Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Year 10 Topics covered in each term are:
- Term 1: Chemistry
- Term 2: Human Species
- Term 3: Motion & Forces
- Term 4: Astronomy & School Certificate Skills
During each lesson, students develop:
- a strong conceptual understanding of the fundamental ideas of science through simple explanations and practical demonstrations.
- strong writing skills for producing clear, concise answers to short-answer questions.
- the ability to solve a wide range of numerical problems. Teachers first demonstrate the solutions to various example questions, before turning students loose on Concept Checks in the Theory Booklets.
Students receive:
- Weekly Theory Booklets that cover all essential topics from the Stage 5 Science syllabus in extensive detail.
- Work Booklets for homework to test students’ independent problem-solving skills
- Frequent quizzes and Module Tests to practise answers as required in both SC and HSC examinations
- Additional help with their science learning. Students are recommended to attend ‘Workshops’ for further assistance when their assessments indicate they have struggled with a topic.
- Additional help with their school work. Students are recommended to consult our academic coordinator for further assistance.
