Year 11 English
Matrix Education offers four courses to Year 11 students:
During each lesson, students learn:
- the ability to perform Comparative and Critical Study of specific texts
- the skills to analyse texts and examine their relevance
- the knowledge of how and why texts are composed and constructed in certain ways to achieve specific purposes.
- academic writing and expression skills to ensure success in every discipline of the Stage 6 Higher School Certificate.
Students receive:
- Weekly Theory Booklets that introduce and examine a broad variety of texts, both written and visual. Students apply the skills of textual analysis, and compose formal written responses.
- Weekly Work Booklets which consist of exam-style writing tasks. They assist students in revising and applying the core knowledge and skills introduced in class, including formal essay writing and textual conventions.
- Templates for a variety of textual forms including essay writing.
- Topic Test to assess students' progress. Students perform the test under strict exam conditions. This gives students an opportunity to practise exam techniques acquired and assess their progress before they sit for school exams
- One-to-One Feedback on written work is provided through weekly ‘The Writing centre’ to students who need to improve analytical and written skills.
- Additional help with their school work. Students are recommended to consult our academic coordinator for assistance.
- Academic research materials and resources.
Students who cannot attend the weekly workshop can communicate and receive feedback by e-mail between weekly lessons.
Advanced English
In the Advanced English course, students examine and deconstruct the ways events, experiences, ideas, values and processes are represented in and through texts and analyse the ways texts reflect different attitudes and values. The course aims to develop the students’ critical and analytical skills to a sophisticated level, and to refine their academic register in order to produce excellent essay responses.
Standard English
In the Standard Preliminary English course, students examine and deconstruct the ways events, experiences, ideas and processes are represented in and through texts. They examine audience and purpose, and experiment with a variety of textual forms including prose, poetry, drama, non-fiction and film. The course supplements the suggested content of the NSW Board of Studies, and aims to develop the students’ critical and writing skills to a sophisticated level in order to produce excellent essay responses.
Extension 1 English
In the Extension 1 English course, students explore ideas of value and consider how they arise and why some texts may be perceived as culturally significant. The course focuses on a deeper philosophical analysis of texts, and concentrates on developing a sophisticated writing style and academic register. Students must demonstrate excellent writing and analytical skills in order to meet the demands of this course.
ESL English
The ESL Preliminary English course provides students with opportunities to address broad aspects of language through an Area of Study, explore, analyse and experiment with meaning conveyed and shaped within a text, and explore connections between and among texts. Students build a wide vocabulary base and develop a firm understanding of the requirements of an essay response, essential for success in the HSC ESL syllabus.
