Year 11 Mathematics

Matrix Education offers three courses in Mathematics to Year 11 Students:

Year 11 Mathematics courses are designed to introduce students commencing preliminary HSC course to the fundamental concepts in algebra, geometry, functions and limits and techniques involved in differentiation.

The courses expose students to a range of mathematical skills and techniques to better equip them for the demands of the HSC course.

During each lesson students develop:

  • an understanding of the fundamental mathematical ideas presented in each topic
  • mathematical skills to apply their knowledge and understanding to mathematical problems that are graded in level of difficulty
  • the ability to analyse concrete and abstract problems and select the appropriate methods to the solution
  • the ability to present logical solutions using appropriate strategies and providing sound reasoning to justify their conclusions

Student receive:

  • Weekly Theory Booklets with clear and explicit explanations of the concepts and skills addressed in each topic prescribed by the NSW Board of Studies Preliminary course in Mathematics. Routine and challenging examples illustrate the application to a wide variety of mathematical situations
  • Weekly Work Booklets provide students with further practice of the work covered in the theory lessons so as to increase students’ confidence in applying mathematical skills and techniques.
  • Regular Quizzes to monitor student understanding in each topic and diagnose any weaknesses that need to be addressed in the lessons.
  • Topic Tests at the end of each topic to assess student mastery of each topic. Students perform the test under strict exam conditions. This gives students an opportunity to practise exam techniques acquired and assess their progress before they sit for school exams and assessment tasks.
  • Timely Feedback on homework, weekly quizzes and topic tests
  • Additional Help  with homework  Students can attend ‘Workshops’ and receive individual assistance with homework.
  • Additional help with their school work. Students can consult the Mathematics Coordinator for further assistance  with school work or to clarify any conceptual difficulties

Year 11 Mathematics

This course is for those students who have demonstrated a mastery of the concepts and skills developed in the NSW Board of Studies Stage 5.2 course or an understanding of most of the topics in the NSW Board of Studies Stage 5.3 course, particularly the Number, Algebra, Geometry and Measurement strands.

Our course covers all the topics prescribed by the NSW Board of Studies Preliminary Course in Mathematics and is carefully designed to meet the needs of the students attempting this courses.

Year 11 Mathematics Ext 1

Students cover extension work in addition to the topics covered in the Mathematics Course thoroughly so that students are able to tackle more complex problems.
Students attempting this course must demonstrate a mastery of most of the concepts and skills developed in the NSW Board of Studies Stage 5.3 course in order to cope with the level of presentation and the depth to which topics are treated.
At the end of Year 11, a grading test on the Mathematics Ext 1 Preliminary course is conducted.  The results from this test are used to recommend students into classes in the Y12 Mathematics Ext 1 or Y12 Mathematics Ext 2 courses.

Year 11 Mathematics Ext 1 Acceleration Course

Students in Year 10 who have shown an excellent mastery of the content covered in the NSW Board of Studies Stage 5.3 course or are being accelerated at school are recommended to participate in the Year 11 Mathematics Ext 1 Acceleration Course from the beginning of the Matrix Term 4 of Year 10.
Our course aims to provide students participating in this course with the opportunity to attempt the HSC examination in Mathematics at the end of Year 11.  More competent students may have covered sufficient material to allow them the opportunity to attempt the HSC examination in Mathematics Ext 1 at the end of Year 11.
