Year 12 Chemistry

 

COURSE OVERVIEW 

Year 12 Chemistry course builds upon the Preliminary course content, giving students the opportunity to draw together different areas of Chemistry and solve real-world problems. 

Topics covered each term:

  • Term 1: Production of Materials
  • Term 2: The Acidic Environment
  • Term 3: Chemical Monitoring & Management
  • Term 4: Option Topic + HSC Revision

Matrix Education also offers the following Option Topics. Students are required to complete one of the options

  • Industrial Chemistry
  • Shipwrecks, Corrosion & Conservation
  • Chemistry of Art
  • Forensic Chemistry

 

During each lesson, students develop:

  • an in-depth understanding of the fundamental ideas of chemistry through simple explanations, practice questions and media assisted practical demonstrations
  • a familiarity with the style and variety of HSC questions
  • strong writing skills for producing clear, concise answers to short-answer questions
  • the ability to solve a wide range of numerical problems. Teachers first demonstrate the solutions to various example questions, before turning students loose on Concept Checks in the Theory Booklets

 

Students receive: 

  • Weekly Theory Booklets, which cover all the content of the HSC Chemistry syllabus in detail.
  • Weekly Work Booklets for homework, which consist of HSC exam-style questions. This allow students to develop independent problem-solving skills and prepare them for school exams
  • Topic Test. Students perform the test under strict exam conditions. This gives students an opportunity to practise exam techniques acquired and assess their progress before they sit for school exams
  • Timely Feedback on homework, weekly quizzes and topic tests.
  • Additional help with homework. Students can attend ‘Workshops’ and receive individual assistance with homework.
  • Additional help with their school work. Students can consult the Chemistry Coordinator for further assistance  with school work or to clarify conceptual difficulties.
