COURSE OVERVIEW

The Year 12 Advanced Mathematics Course covers all the topics prescribed in the NSW Board of Studies HSC course in Mathematics and includes revision during the year so as to ensure mastery of the content of this course.

Students attempting this course must have completed and acquired a sound understanding of all the following Preliminary topics in Year 11: Basic Arithmetic and Algebra; Real Functions; Trigonometric Ratios; Linear Functions, Quadratic Polynomial and the Parabola, Plane Geometry and Introductory Calculus.

The course exposes students to a range of mathematical skills and techniques to better equip them for the demands of the HSC examination.

During each lesson, students develop:
  • an understanding of the fundamental mathematical ideas presented in each topic
  • mathematical skills to apply their knowledge and understanding to mathematical problems that are graded in level of difficulty
  • the ability to analyse concrete and abstract problems and select the appropriate methods to the solution
  • the ability to present logical solutions using appropriate strategies and providing sound reasoning to justify their conclusions

Students receive:

  • Weekly Theory Booklets with clear and explicit explanations of the concepts and skills addressed in each topic prescribed by the NSW Board of Studies HSC course in Mathematics. Routine and challenging examples illustrate the application to a wide variety of mathematical situations.

  • Weekly Work Booklets provide students with further practice of the work covered in the theory lessons so as to increase students’ confidence in applying mathematical skills and techniques.
  • Regular Quizzes to monitor student understanding in each topic and diagnose any weaknesses that need to be addressed in the lessons.
  • Topic Tests at the end of each topic to assess student mastery of each topic. Students perform the test under strict exam conditions. This gives students an opportunity to practise exam techniques and assess their progress before they sit for school exams and assessment tasks.
  • Timely Feedback on homework, weekly quizzes and topic tests.
  • Extra Assistance is provided through weekly 'Workshops' to students who are identified as experiencing difficulty with the work covered in the Theory lessons or homework. Workshops are conducted by our tutors. There is no added charge for this service.
  • Additional help with their school work. Students can consult their teacher or the Mathematics Head Teacher for further assistance  with school work or to clarify any conceptual difficulties

Students will learn in:

Term 1: Geometrical Applications of Differentiation; Integration
Term 2: Series & its Applications; Exponential Functions

Term 3: Logarithmic Functions; Trigonometric Functions; Probability

Term 4: Rates of Change; Motion; HSC Preparation
