Year 8 Maths
COURSE OVERVIEW
The Year 8 Mathematics course is based on the NSW Board of Studies Stage 4 Syllabus and builds on the concepts and skills developed in our 2009 Year 7 program.
The strands of Number, Patterns and Algebra, Data, Measurement and Space and Geometry are covered thoroughly in this course and the processes of the Working Mathematically strand are embedded into each of these strands.
A revised program will be developed in 2010 to reflect the changes made in our new year 7 program to be implemented from Matrix Term 1 2010 (October 2009)

During each lesson, students develop:
- an understanding of the fundamental mathematical ideas presented in each topic.
- an understanding and appreciation of the increasing complexities and abstract nature of Mathematics.
- theory and proofs that show relationships and patterns within and across topics.
- mathematical skills to apply their knowledge and understanding to mathematical problems that are graded in level of difficulty.
- the ability to analyse concrete and abstract problems and select the appropriate methods to the solution.
- the ability to present logical solutions using appropriate strategies and providing sound reasoning to justify their conclusions.
Students receive:
- Weekly Theory Booklets with clear and explicit explanations of the concepts and skills addressed in each topic prescribed in the NSW Board of Studies Years 7 -10 Mathematics Syllabus. Routine and challenging examples illustrate the application to a wide variety of mathematical situations.
- Weekly Work Booklets provide students with further practice of the work covered in the theory lessons so as to increase students’ confidence in applying mathematical skills and techniques.
- Weekly Quizzes to monitor student understanding of the work covered in the previous lesson and diagnose any weaknesses that need to be addressed in the lessons.
- Term Topic Test to assess student mastery of the topics covered during the term. Students perform the test under strict exam conditions. This gives students an opportunity to practise exam techniques acquired and assess their progress before they sit for school exams.
- Timely Feedback on homework, weekly quizzes and topic tests.
- Extra Assistance through weekly 'Workshops' to students who are identified as experiencing difficulty with the work covered in the Theory lessons or homework. Workshops are conducted by our tutors. There is no added charge for this service.
Students will learn in:
Term 1: Pythagoras’ Theorem, Number Plane, Indices
Term 2: Algebraic Equations & Inequalities, Data and Probability
Term 3: Rates & Ratio, Geometry and Measurement
Term 4: Similarity & Congruence, Measurement and Consumer Arithmetic
Our program in Years 8 will broaden students’ mathematical experience and extend into Stage 5.1 and 5.2 topics.
Our Year 7 & 8 programs prepare our students for the rigor and challenges that are presented in the Stage 5.3 course for Years 9 & 10
